In 2016 the Hortus botanicus Leiden is centered around the 150 year anniversary of the death of Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold. This German doctor in medicine worked for the Dutch government between 1823 and 1829. In this period he was stationed at Nagasaki as a medical doctor. Von Siebold introduced more than 700 species of plants from Japan and East Asia.
