From 2016 the Hortus is collaborating in the three-year-long Horizon 2020 project ‘BigPicnic’. The exhibitions and programme in the Hortus are all about edible plants and food. For this project culinary journalist Onno Kleyn wrote 8 recipes about spices from the Hortus botanicus Leiden, in 2018 followed by 8 recipes for soups. Here you can find all 8 soup recipes:
- Runner bean soup with lemon, carrot and carrot tops

- Sweet potato & hazelnut soup with black pepper
- Chilled sorrel soup with cucumber
- Parsnip soup with beetroot and lime
